Distance, Trade and FDI: A Hausman-Taylor SUR Approach
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper analyzes the effects of distance as a common determinant of exports and FDI in a three factors New Trade Theory model assuming that distance affects both pure trade costs and plant set-up costs. Exports and FDI are not necessarily substitutes with respect to distance since the predicted sign depends on its importance for fixed plant set-up costs relative to transportation costs. For the empirical specification, we suggest that the impact of of time-invariant variables such as distance is most appropriately analyzed in a Hausman-Taylor SURmodel. In our application, outward FDI is negatively affected by distance while its effect on exports is insignificant. Exports and outward FDI are complementary with respect to the time-invariant unobserved factors and also with respect to the majority of the exogenous observed determinants.

A Panel Analysis of Good Governance and FDI on Economic Growth in MENA Region
The paper focuses on regional trade agreements and economic co-operation and develops a new appropriate approach to study their impact on growth and trade. The approach is based on an endogenous trade-growth theory and novelly specified in an economic integration (expenditure) framework which is the conceptual foundation of regional trade agreements. Importantly, it also appropriately takes int...

T he importance of foreign direct investment (FDI) in developing countries has begun to spread very rapidly, especially after the transition of command economies countries into open markets. Many countries see attracting FDI as an important element in their strategy for economic growth because FDI is widely regarded as an amalgamation of capital, technology, marketing, and management...
متن کاملTrade in Services: Does Gravity Hold? A Gravity Model Approach to Estimating Barriers to Services Trade
This paper assesses the determinants of trade in services using a gravity model, with particular attention given to the role of barriers to services trade. Initially, the application of the gravity equation to services trade is examined. A variety of econometric estimators are tested and the Hausman-Taylor model is found to be the best estimator. The gravity model fits services trade flows in a...
متن کاملThe Interactive Relationship between Regional Trade Integration and Foreign Direct Investment
E conomic integration among countries has continued to deepen over the past decade. This is especially visible at the regional level, with the escalation of Regional Integration Agreements (RIAs) ranging from Free Trade Areas (FTAs) to Customs Unions (CUs). Nowadays, many developing countries have entered a new regional integration agreement with developed and developing countries. S...
متن کاملLongitude Matters: Time Zones, the location of FDI, and Trade
In recent years a lot of attention has been paid to geographic latitude and its relationship with key variables like economic growth, development, and institutional quality. In this paper we show that longitude (time zones) also matters. Using bilateral Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) data and gravity model estimations, we find that time zones have a significant impact on the location of FDI. F...
